Prevalence and Incidence Studies: A tool for evaluating presure ulcer prevention interventions and improving patient outcomes First Author: Kathy Whittington Authors: Robin Briones, BBA Purpose: To provide facilities with pressure ulcer incidence data (based on length of stay) for quality improvement.Methodology: This National Pressure Ulcer Prevalence and Incidence study has been conducted in March each year since 1999. Acute care facilities conduct two observations of patients for the presence of pressure ulcers. De-identified demographic, and wound data is collected, including but not limited to the following, "Breakdown Noted On Admission", "Physical Location", "Primary Diagnosis", "Ulcer Stages". The data forms are sent to a central site for processing. Participating facilities receive facility specific reports as well as an aggregate database report for comparison. Results: Prevalence and Incidence Study reports can be used to facilitate change in pressure ulcer prevention and treatment. The information reported can be used to monitor and update protocols, educate staff and implement strategies to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers in a facility. Conclusions: The data from a pressure ulcer prevalence and incidence study report can be used to assist facilities with their pressure ulcer quality improvement projects. The information gathered in the two observations of patients can highlight areas where improvement can be made or where it is already occurring. |
