Use of Nanocrystalline Silver-Coated Antimicrobial Barrier Dressings* in the Successful Management of Severe Burns First Author: Shaher Khan Authors: Philip Fidler, MD; John T. Schulz MD,PhD; Nabil Atweh, MD This case series illustrate the successful use of nanocrystalline silver-coated antimicrobial barrier dressings* in the management of severe burns.Case A - A deep partial-thickness burn from steam and hot ash to the left heel and left forefoot in a 48 year-old male along with a concomitant wound infection in a diabetic patient. The poster presentation illustrates the successful healing in a diabetic patient.Case B - A deep partial-thickness burn after hot flaming grease burn to the right upper extremity in a 26 year-old right-hand dominant African-American male. Serial applications of the silver dressing* were applied at 3-day intervals with a total of 3 treatments allowing the deep partial-thickness burn to heal well by day 10.Case C - An 81 year-old Caucasian gentleman with dementia suffered a partial to full-thickness flame burn of approximately 10% TBSA to the left chest, left upper extremity, left ear, neck, part of the face, and lower chin. This case illustrates the use of silver dressings* in the successful management of deep partial-thickness burns in just 23 days.Significant savings in not only nursing time and analgesia were accomplished with fewer dressing changes, but, more importantly, patient comfort and family satisfaction were also noted.*ACTICOAT antimicrobial barrier dressing - Smith & Nephew Wound ManagementInc, Largo, Fl. |
