INNOVATIVE PRESSURE REDISTRIBUTION: A TWO-CENTRE PROSPECTIVE STUDY FEATURING ALTERNATING THERAPY

Introduction Often a new device is introduced on the assumption that clinical performance will be as claimed. However, as the overall prevalence of pressure ulcers in the population seems little changed over time, despite heavy investment, one should question whether some devices fail to deliver the expected benefits. This simple, but robust, prospective outcome study provides basic information essential for evidence-based practice. Methods High risk, consenting, acute care patients were allocated either an Alternating Mattress Replacement (APRM) or Alternating Mattress Overlay (APO). Data included: demographic, morphology, and risk, plus stage and progress of extant wounds. Results 170 patients were recruited from two hospitals: 75% of subjects were at elevated risk of pressure damage; 29% had existing ulcers. 77% improved or healed while just four (2.3%) patients developed superficial ulcers Ð attributed to friction/maceration and incontinence. Discussion These innovative devices have proved suitable for the prevention and healing of ulcers including problematic heel ulcers in the most vulnerable individuals, including obese and immobile patients.
