Often times patients who suffer from lower extremity ulceration can successfully heal their wounds only to go on to experience re-ulceration at the original ulcer site. Skin structures of a recently healed wound do not have the same strength and characteristics of mature skin. The aim of the study was to determine whether or not applying skin protective emollient* would enhanced healing of re-epithelialized lower extremity ulcers. The skin protective emollient* was applied in a randomized, open, controlled, pilot study in which patients with recently re-epithelialized ulcers were selected from a random sample of patients from the National Center for Limb Preservation and from Lutheran General Hospital Wound Care Department. During the study, one group received the skin protective emollient* and the other group did not. Both groups were received standard care treatment and patient education about self-care. Patients receiving the protective emmolient* were given a two week supply. Study subjects were seen at week 1 and at the end of week 6,7, or 8. In conclusion, subjects with re-epithelialized ulcers in the treatment group showed improvement in healing over the subjects in the non-treatment group. skin protective emollient* = Remedyª, MedLine Industries, Inc.
