Objective: Determine the efficacy of a novel collagen with silver dressing* for patients with recalcitrant wounds. Patient 1: Middle-aged diabetic presents with Stage IV wound originating at the medial aspect of the fifth toe on left foot. Day 1: Tunneling wound protrudes to bone. The wound is measured to be 1.3 cm deep and 0.5 cm in diameter. Day 21: Patient reports no paint at wound site. Wound appears to have healed. Epithelial tissue is present and periwound tissue appears callous. Patient 2: Patient presents with non-healing wound at the dorsal/lateral styloid process (base of fifth metatarsal). Wound has persisted since 2002 post radiation therapy on lower legs. Day 1: Wound is assessed as Stage III and measures 1 x 1 cm. Connective tissue is visible and wound bed is red with pink drainage. Day 35: Patient no longer reports any pain caused by the wound. Periwound tissue is dry. Wound size continues to decrease and is measured at 0.65 x 0.65 cm. Patient 3: Patient is a diabetic presenting with a Stage III wound in the nail bed of right hallux as well as Stage IV wound at the apex of fifth digit of left foot. Onset of wounds was September 2005. Day 1: Wound on right hallux measures 0.4 x 0.4 cm. Wound on fifth digit of left foot measures 0.3 x 0.3 cm. Wound bed is pink with yellow drainage. Day 28: Wound on left foot is completely healed. Wound on right hallux has continued to heal and is measured at 0.1 x 0.1 cm. Epithelial and granulation tissue are visible. Conclusion: The use of a novel collagen with silver dressing facilitates the closure of recalcitrant wounds. *ColActive Ag
