There are many skin care formulations currently used in the medical arena. Many claims of efficacy and safety are made with little supporting data at times. In light of this lack of data, knowing a thing or two about the ingredients comprising the various formulations may provide some guidance as to the level of safety and efficacy one can expect. In understanding a bit about skin care formulations one can….. • Understand how to use the products more effectively. • Understand the function and purpose of the ingredients. • Better evaluate the claims and the labels of the products. • Have a better understanding of the safety of the products. In this review a general description of the formulation components of creams, lotions, barrier pastes, cleansers, skin preps, etc., is given as well as the function of various components. In addition the pros and cons of some of the ingredients are discussed. Issues of pH, surfactants, solvents, etc., and their effects on the health of the skin are discussed. It is hoped that with a little knowledge of the make up of various formulations, the care giver will be in a better position to use them to their fullest benefit.
