Reduction of pain and improved wound healing utilizing a bilayered living cell therapy in cases of pyoderma gangrenosum First Author: Barbara J. Aung, DPM, CWS Authors: Barbara Aung, DPM, CWS Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare condition causing progressive necrotizing ulceration of the skin with severe wound breakdown. Patients presenting with wounds of this nature experience delayed healing with associated pain, often severe.Patients with duration of open wounds between 3 months to 5 years, who have failed to respond to conventional wound therapies are treated using the bilayered living cell therapy*. Upon initial presentation confirmation of pyoderma gangrenosum was obtained through a thorough work up, with a wound tissue biopsy to rule out diagnoses that mimic pyoderma gangrenosum. After surgical preparation/debridement of each wound site, the bilayered living cell therapy* was applied and the wound site dressed in the standard manner. Each patient was post operatively followed and rates of healing were documented by physical examination and through planimetry evaluation. Pain reduction was measured utilizing a visual analog scale (VAS). In each case the wound time to healing was decreased by some 30% with complete closure achieved within 8 weeks in some cases. Associated pain was reported by the patients and is noted as being greatly reduced by decreased VAS scores, and in some cases reports of absence of pain after one application of the bilayered living cell therapy*Product notation:*Apligraf, Organogenesis, Inc., Canton, Mass |
