Rapid closure of a twelve year old supraclavicular radionecrosis wound using porcine small intestinal submucosa

Mona M. Baharestani, PhD, ANP, CWOCN, CWS, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New Hyde Park, NY

Surgery performed within an irradiated field often results in chronic nonhealing wounds. Historically, inflammatory and angiogenic responses are noteably diminished in irritated tissues. Permanently damaged fibroblasts, stromal abnormalities and relative ischemia within the field of radiation contribute to failed healing.

This case report will describe the complete closure (within 4 weeks) of a 12 year old subclavicular wound within an irridated field in an 80 year old steroid dependent female with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and rheumatoid arthritis, utilizing porcine small intestinal submucosa*.
